Description
I took this picture one week before the National Gallery closed due to the Corona-19. This painting is by Canaletto. People are hard at work on boats beside the church of San Pietro in Castello. Until 1807, this church served as the city's cathedral, while the Basilica di San Marco was the private church of the doge (the Venetian head of state). This eastern part of Venice was a largely working class neighborhood, reflective here in the barge laden with hay and the fishermen trailing their nets.
