Description
Rolls Royce Merlin engines recovered from the crash site of Supermarine Spitfire MkVB WB3839 and BM346 of 401 sqn Royal Canadian Air Force.
On the 17th of February 1943, the Spitfires took off from RAF Catterick for a formation flying excercise. The aircraft collided at about 14.00 hours and crashed near North Allerton, North Yorkshire, UK with the loss of both pilots.
W3839 was flown by Flight Sergeant Leonard Gilis aged 28. This Spitfire was a presentation aircraft "Kettering District".
BM346 was Flown by WO1 Harvey Donald Muirhead aged 24, of Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada. - © Doc Braham - All Rights Reserved
